Baked Cinnamon French Toast

French toast, also known as “eggy bread” is a breakfast favourite, and this cinnamon and vanilla version is a classic. Slices of white, brown or raisin bread are covered in whisked eggs and milk, then cooked in the oven for about 30 minutes. Save time and soak bread ahead of time, keeping refrigerated until ready to bake.

  • 6 slices white, whole wheat or raisin bread
  • 1 tsp ( 5 mL ) ground cinnamon
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ cup ( 125 mL ) milk (1%)
  • ½ cup ( 125 mL ) maple syrup or table syrup
  • 2 tbsp ( 30 mL ) butter or margarine
  • 1 tsp ( 5 mL ) vanilla extract
  • Fruit and maple syrup (optional)


  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Spray 13 x 9-inch (33 x 23) baking dish with cooking spray. Arrange bread slices to fit in single layer in dish; sprinkle cinnamon over bread.
  3. Whisk eggs, milk, syrup, butter and vanilla in medium bowl just until blended. Pour evenly over bread. Bake immediately or cover and refrigerate several hours or overnight.
  4. Bake, uncovered, in preheated 350°F (180°C) oven until firm to the touch, about 30 minutes. Serve with fruit and maple syrup, if desired.
