Meet Our Farmers: Susan Schafers

Alberta 2nd Generation Egg Farmer

“Farmers never really retire,” laughs Susan Schafers. She’s happy to have her dad’s assistance with some of the daily chores on the family farm she now manages. “My brother helps out too, mostly with equipment repair.”

Many farms in Canada are passed down from generation to generation, with the older generation often continuing to remain involved to an extent. With new management sometimes comes change.

Several years ago, Susan modified her hens’ housing from a conventional system to a free run style to help provide consumers with additional options when purchasing eggs at the grocery store.

Susan loves being an egg farmer and finds great reward and satisfaction gathering and packing the eggs her hens lay each day.
