Meet Our Farmers: Glen Wallington

Northwest Territories 1st Generation Egg Farmer

For the past seven years, Glen Wallington has run Choice North Farms and Hay River Poultry out of Hay River, Northwest Territories. Together these farms are home to 118,000 hens, making them the largest egg farm in the Northwest Territories.

While the area has little in the way of competition, running a farm 12,000 km North of Edmonton poses its own unique challenges. “It’s a whole different game up here,” Glen says, “with extremes in temperatures, lack of resources and long hauls for feed, lots of hard work goes into every egg we produce.”

Fortunately Glen’s children are happy to help. His two sons Michael and Kevin currently help him run the business and his 14-year-old daughter plans to join the farm as a veterinarian when she’s finished her schooling.

Besides getting to work side by side with his family, Glen’s favourite part of egg farming is providing his neighbours with locally produced food. “Most things up here are shipped in,” he says, “but our eggs are always fresh.”
